David Bruno Campaign Engines Starting!
Updated: Jul 29
I am the Republican candidate for the Southeast Community College Board of Governors. Carina McCormick is the incumbent and she has spent a lot of effort to present herself as a conservative, but please do not be fooled! McCormick is one thing for sure and that is a staunchly liberal Democrat.
I assure you, Ms. McCormick has no interest in responsible spending and had no connection whatsoever to reducing property taxes as she voted in 2023 to INCREASE your Property Taxes by 40%. The relief occurred through Republican efforts to create the Community College Future Funds (CCFF) Program, public outrage, and 23 state Senators that opposed the SCC Board of Governor's decision to implement a tax grab as it was contrary to the Governor's Property Tax Relief bill.
For understanding, in 2023, the most significant controversy involving the Southeast Community College (SCC) Board of Governors was a proposal to raise the property tax levy to the maximum allowed rate, drawing heavy criticism from 23 Nebraska state senators who argued it contradicted efforts to reduce local tax burdens. The tax levy increase proposal was to hike the tax levy from 9.37 cents to 11.25 cents per valuation, which the lawmakers argued could raise local taxes for SCC by up to 40%. SCC and board members defended the move.
Furthermore, from personal experience, I can attest that building designs and extremely expensive technological equipment on the SCC campus are not always made in the best interest of the taxpayers; the brand new Health Sciences building on the SCC Main Campus simply does not utilize vital space, but was built with an atrium view throughout the entire center of the structure giving up valuable educational space and increasing heating/cooling costs, loss of storage spaces, and forcing offices, classrooms, and administrative areas to be significantly smaller than could have been with proper, common-sense design. Please see the photo on the tab labeled "The Truth About McCormick."
So, I ask you, the voters, do you really want to continue with the status quo where common sense is not practiced on the Southeast Community College and with the decisions being made by the Board of Governors? Property Taxes may not directly fund SCC as it did only a couple years ago, but if there are budget shortfalls and a 70% board vote, the Board can reinstitute their levying power. How much do you value your home? Would you rather lose it due to a 40% Property Tax hike, so the SCC Board of Governors can build another inefficient building on a campus and provide the SCC President with a huge pay raise? Or would you rather see reckless spending reigned in with common sense solutions?
Carina McCormick will present herself as a "conservative voice" while haphazardly spending the money you provide to SCC. It is time for an actual conservative voice with common sense solutions to be YOUR voice on the SCC Board of Governors! Please vote for Bruno on November 3, 2026.
